Turkana Expeditions

Turkana-Culture

Northern Kenya is not densely populated, untamed and often barren. Lake TurkanaVisiting these parts is like leaving the 21st century; it is an explorer’s heaven, and the variety of tribes that live here are some of the most captivating people in the world. Lake Turkana South IslandThey include the Samburu, Turkana, Rendille, Boran, Gabbra and El – Molo. This is a rugged 1,800-km expedition  run in land cruiser or expedition trucks. You will traverse along some of Africa’s worst roads; see beautiful mountain forest surrounded on all sides by hot dusty deserts, eventually arriving at our camp on the shores of the Jade Sea (Lake Turkana). Victoria Safaris is offering this as our best selling safari for those true explorers and travellers who want to get off the tourist beaten track and for it, we are highly recommended.

“While it is the lake that provides the nominal incentives for doing this trip, it is the people of northern Kenya that make the most lasting impression, nomadic pastoralists such as the Gabbra, Turkana and Samburu whose adherence to a strictly traditional lifestyle and dress is practically unique in modern East Africa. In small villages such as North Horr or Kalacha, even in the city of Loiyangalani, you could be forgiven for thinking that the whole human spectacle is being put on for tourists. Turkana CultureAs we returned to Nairobi from Turkana, we felt as if we had travelled not only through space but also through time, to be granted a vision of Africa as it might have been a hundred years ago. That this ancient human landscape still exists in a country as relatively developed as Kenya simply defies belief!” Philip Briggs, travel writer and tour consultant best describes this safari.

 Lake Turkana

Lake TurkanaLake Turkana formerly known as Lake Rudolf, is a lake in the Kenyan Rift Valley, with its far northern end crossing into Ethiopia. It is the world’s largest permanent desert lake and the world’s largest alkaline lake. By volume it is the world’s fourth-largest salt lake[citation needed] after the Caspian Sea, Issyk-Kul, and Lake Van (passing the shrinking South Aral Sea), and among all lakes it ranks 24th. The water is potable, but not palatable. It supports a rich lacustrine wildlife. The climate is hot and very dry.

The rocks of the surrounding area are predominantly volcanic. Central Island is an active volcano, emitting vapour. Outcrops and rocky shores are found on the east and south shores of the lake, while dunes, spits and flats are on the west and north, at a lower elevation.

On-shore and off-shore winds can be extremely strong, as the lake warms and cools more slowly than the land. Sudden, violent storms are frequent. Three rivers (the Omo, Turkwel and Kerio) flow into the lake, but lacking outflow, its only water loss is by evaporation. Lake volume and dimensions are variable. For example, its level fell by 10 metres between 1975 and 1993.

Due to temperature, aridity and geographic inaccessibility, the lake retains its wild character. Nile crocodiles are found in great abundance on the flats. The rocky shores are home to scorpions and carpet vipers. Although the lake and its environs have been popular for expeditions of every sort under the tutelage of guides, rangers and experienced persons, they certainly must be considered hazardous for unguided tourists.

Lake Bogoria

Lake Bogoria Hot SpringsFlamingoLake Bogoria is well known for its hot springs. The Loburu hot springs erupt along the lakeside and create such an attraction. Not do be deceived, these hot springs as attractive as they are, can be extremely dangerous because of the extreme boiling temperatures of the springs.
The hot springs and geysers are located on the western shore and are over a sizable area erupting at intervals of 3 minutes and go as high as five feet high. The minerals from the water have an ashy color that makes the ground around whitish-gray. The local people believe that the water has healing powers and that inhaling the vapors cleanses the internal organs and leaves the outer skin smoother/healthier. I believe it is the properties of the minerals produced by the hot waters coming from deep within the earth’s crust.

Lake Baringo

Motor Boating Lake BaringoFish EagleThe best way to explore Lake Baringo and its islands is by motor boat. Your guide will know exactly where to find specific birds and wildlife and you’re in for a sensational tour. 130 sqkm Lake Baringo has a high silt content and can appear red, yellow, coral or purple, depending on the time of day and the sun’s location. These colourful waters are teeming with fish, especially Talapia and African Lungfish, and you can enjoy some exceptionally good fishing.
